Microsoft stopped the free, regular security patches for Windows 10 in October 2025. If you are still on it in 2026, the machine still boots. Websites still open. That is the trap. The known holes stop getting official fixes unless you pay for a special program most homes will not buy, or you move.
What “out of support” actually means
It does not mean the PC is illegal. It means the vendor walked away from the free repair list. Attackers read those lists. Worms and ransomware have always preferred last year’s Windows because the patch is public and the install base is huge. Windows 7 had the same afterlife. People kept it because a payroll app only ran there. The app did not get safer.
Windows 11 wants newer hardware: TPM, a CPU on a list. Some boxes cannot move. Then the honest options are a replacement, a Linux install if you can live with it, or accepting that this machine should not hold mail, banking, or the only copy of photos.
What to do this month
Check Settings, then System, then About. If it says Windows 10, plan the exit. Back up first. Then see if the PC qualifies for 11. If it does not, treat it like a kiosk: browsing on a phone, files copied off, no password reuse with your real accounts.
Extended paid updates exist for organizations. A household that googles a crack for those updates is buying a second problem. The OS is not a personality. It is a maintenance contract. When the contract ends, you move or you wait for someone else to pick the lock.
