Romance scams: the long con in your DMs

Stolen faces, fake trading apps, and why video is not optional after money talk.

Romance scams are not a single famous trial. They are a pile of small tragedies that look the same in the police reports. Someone kind appears on a dating app or in the comments. The bond grows for weeks. Then a problem: a hospital bill, a customs fee, a crypto investment that only they can walk you through. The face was stolen. The voice on the rare call is a team. The money leaves through gift cards, wires, and coins that do not bounce.

Pig butchering is the ugly nickname for the long version, often with fake trading apps that show fake profits until you try to withdraw. Whole compounds have been tied to this in public reporting. You do not need the geopolitics. You need the pattern.

The tells that survive new apps

They cannot video chat, or the camera is always broken. They want to move off the dating app fast. They talk about investment like a secret club. They ask you to install a second “trading” app from a link, not from the official store. They get angry when you ask a friend.

A real partner you met last month does not need your bank login. A real broker is licensed where you live and does not live only in Telegram.

What to do if you already sent money

Stop. Tell the bank and the coin shop if there is one. Tell a person you trust in the room, not only a stranger in a “recovery” ad. Recovery scams hunt people who just got burned. Report it so the next person is slightly less alone. Shame is part of the design. It keeps you quiet.

Awareness here is unromantic. Slow down. Video is not optional after a month of money talk. Investments you did not seek out are not love. The internet makes a fake intimacy cheap. Your savings are not.
