Right to repair is the campaign — and in more places, the law — pushing manufacturers to sell parts, publish manuals, and stop designing devices that brick themselves when an independent shop tries to help.

Farmers, phone technicians, and hospital engineers have been loud about this for years. Legislatures in the US and Europe started listening. The story is less about nostalgia for screwdrivers and more about whether ownership still means anything when software sits between you and the hardware.

Why did fixing things get harder?

Parts locked behind serial pairing. Batteries glued in. Error codes that only dealer software can clear. Manuals withheld. Cheap devices priced so a screen replacement rivals a new unit — which is a business model, not an accident. Manufacturers argue safety, security, and brand quality. Independents argue monopoly on maintenance and planned friction.

Phones made the issue personal. Tractors made it political. Medical devices made it urgent: when a ventilator needs a $50 board and only the OEM can authorize it, "intellectual property" stops sounding abstract.

What have laws actually changed?

Pieces, not utopia. Some US states require electronics makers to provide parts and documentation to independents on fair terms. The EU has pushed repairability scores, spare-part availability, and USB-C as a common charger — adjacent pressure that makes devices last longer and swap easier. None of this magically creates a corner shop that can fix every foldable phone overnight. It shifts leverage.

Companies still fight over what counts as a "part," how long stock must last, and whether software locks are security or sabotage. Read the statute in your region before assuming you have new rights; the details decide whether your local tech can order a genuine battery.

Is repairability bad for security?

Sometimes the tension is real. A bootloader that accepts unsigned firmware can help a hobbyist and also help malware. Good repair policy tries to separate "replace a battery" from "silently rewrite the secure enclave." Bad policy pretends those are the same so nothing opens.

As a consumer, prefer devices with published tear-downs, replaceable batteries where possible, and makers that sell parts without a loyalty oath. When a repair needs your login to "authorize" a screen, ask whether that protects you or the warranty department.

What can you do before the next break?

Buy for serviceability when you have a choice. Keep boxes and proof of purchase. Back up before any shop wipe. For farm and business gear, budget for downtime and know which independent techs exist before harvest season. And when a company says repair is impossible, treat that as a claim to verify — sometimes it means "not profitable for us," not "physics forbids it."

Right to repair will not return you to a 1950s world of tube radios. It asks a modern question: if the object only works when the mothership says so, did you buy a product or a subscription with a shell? The answer is still being written in parts catalogs and court filings.
