The Mother of All Demos: the day the future of computing appeared
Douglas Engelbart's 1968 mouse-and-windows demo, Xerox PARC, and how a research show became the desktop you still use.
In December 1968, a research lab in California showed a few dozen people a demo so strange that the industry later nicknamed it the Mother of All Demos. A man named Douglas Engelbart sat on stage in San Francisco, linked by microwave to colleagues in Menlo Park, and used a wooden box on wheels — the first computer mouse — to click through windows, hypertext links, shared documents, and video chat. In ninety minutes he sketched the shape of personal computing twenty years early.
The audience clapped. Then most of the industry went back to punched cards and mainframes. The ideas sat in a lab called Xerox PARC until a visitor from Apple took careful notes — and the rest became the desktop you still use.
What did Engelbart actually invent?
More than a mouse. At Stanford Research Institute he ran a project called NLS — oN-Line System — aimed at "augmenting human intellect". The 1968 demo showed a graphical screen, multiple windows, the mouse, collaborative editing, and remote video. It was not a product. It was a proof that computers could be tools for thinking together, not just calculating payroll.
Engelbart's lab also pioneered hypertext links years before the web, and his later work fed into early internet communities. He was not a slick entrepreneur. He was a systems thinker who believed technology should raise what groups can accomplish. That made him famous in certain circles and commercially awkward in others.
How did Xerox PARC turn demos into a desktop?
Xerox, flush with copier money, opened the Palo Alto Research Center in 1970 and hired talent that wanted to invent the office of the future. There, researchers built the Alto — a personal computer with a bitmap display, ethernet networking (invented there by Bob Metcalfe and colleagues), laser printing, and a graphical interface with icons and overlapping windows. Alan Kay's group pushed the idea of a Dynabook: a personal, portable computer for everyone, including children.
Xerox famously failed to turn PARC's inventions into a dominant computer business. The company understood copiers. It did not understand why anyone would buy a personal workstation. Engineers who visited PARC sometimes understood immediately.
What did Steve Jobs take from the visit?
In 1979, Apple negotiated a stock deal that included visits to PARC. Jobs and his team saw the Alto's interface and, by many accounts, recognized the future in an afternoon. Apple did not copy Alto line for line — the Lisa and Macintosh were new machines — but the conceptual leap was clear: mice, windows, menus, what-you-see-is-what-you-get editing. Microsoft followed on PCs. By the 1990s the graphical desktop was the default, and Engelbart's wooden mouse had become plastic shipped by the billion.
PARC veterans have spent decades arguing about credit, bitterness, and myth. The fair version is shared: Engelbart showed it was possible; PARC made it a coherent system; Apple and others made it a product people would buy.
Why does this history still matter?
Because the tools you argue with daily — windows, pointers, copy-paste, networked documents — were designed as optimism about human collaboration, not as ad platforms. Engelbart wanted better collective problem-solving. Kay wanted personal media for learning. Somewhere between there and infinite scroll, the purpose drifted.
Knowing the origin does not fix the modern web. It does remind you that the desktop was once a radical idea: that ordinary people, not just institutions, deserved a machine that spoke in pictures and pointing instead of codes. The Mother of All Demos lasted ninety minutes. We have been living inside it ever since.
