What is the difference between a MAC address and an IP address?
A public IP address is what websites, IP lookup, and IP geolocation see. A MAC address stays on your local WiFi. Hide my IP needs a VPN, not a new MAC.
An IP address is how the internet finds your connection. A MAC address is how devices on the same local network tell each other apart. People mix them up when they search “what is my IP” or try to hide their IP address. They are not the same thing.
What is an IP address?
A public IP address is the number websites see. IPv4 looks like 203.0.113.10. IPv6 is longer, with colons. Your phone and laptop at home often share one public IPv4 because of NAT on the router. That shared number is what an IP lookup and IP geolocation use.
A private IP, like 192.168.1.12, only works inside the house. Changing it does not hide you on the public internet.
What is a MAC address?
MAC is a hardware label on a WiFi or Ethernet chip, written in hex. The router uses it on the LAN. Websites you visit do not get your MAC. An IP tracker cannot show it. “MAC spoofing” is a local trick. It does not change your public IP address.
MAC vs IP: which one identifies me online?
Online, the public IP is the one that matters for IP location, geo blocking, and “who visited this site.” The MAC stays in the building. If you want to hide your IP from a website, you need a VPN, a different network, or similar. Swapping a MAC will not do that job.
Can I find someone’s MAC from their IP?
Not from a public IP lookup. MAC does not travel with your HTTP request across the internet the way an IP does. Anyone selling “MAC from IP” as a tracking superpower is selling nonsense or malware.
