How to use a VPN in real life
Travel Wi-Fi, work, streaming, and P2P — what a tunnel changes, what it does not, and how to confirm the new IP.
A VPN is a tool with a small list of jobs it does well and a long list of jobs people wish it did. If you only remember one sentence, remember this: a virtual private network changes the path and the public IP of your traffic. It does not make you anonymous, it does not make downloads legal, and it does not replace a password manager. This article is about using a VPN on purpose — on travel Wi-Fi, at home, for work, and for region-locked apps — then checking that it actually took.
What “using a VPN” means in practice
When the app connects, your device opens an encrypted tunnel to a server in a city you picked. Websites then see that server’s IP, not the address your café or home ISP handed you. Your ISP still sees that you are talking to a VPN. The café still sees a device on its network. The useful change is in the middle: local snoopers lose the clear contents of most of your traffic, and destination sites lose your usual IP.
Install the official app from the provider you chose. System-wide mode covers the browser, the mail client, and most other apps. A browser-only extension covers that browser and nothing else. If you only protect Chrome, your phone’s maps app and your desktop downloader still use the raw connection.
Pick a nearby server for speed. Pick a country on purpose when the goal is a catalog or a site that checks region. Do not hop randomly and then wonder why a bank flagged the login. After you connect, open a what-is-my-IP page. The number, the ISP name, and often the city should match the VPN, not the hotel.
Public Wi-Fi: the use case that still matters
Airports, hotels, trains, and conference centers are noisy networks. You do not know who else is on them. You do not know whether the “Free_Airport_WiFi” name is the real one. A VPN on that network is one of the few controls you can add in thirty seconds.
Connect the VPN before you open mail or a password manager if you can. If the captive portal requires a browser login first, finish that, then start the tunnel, then work. Enable the kill switch so a dropped VPN does not silently dump you onto the raw hotspot.
HTTPS already protects the contents of most modern sites. The VPN still helps with older tools, with DNS lookups, and with hiding the list of destinations from whoever runs the hotspot. It also stops you from presenting your home ISP’s IP to every site you visit that day, which is a small privacy win on its own.
Skip random “free VPN” apps that appear in a search ad while you are already on a hostile network. That is how people install a second problem. Use a provider you already paid for, or a reputable free tier you researched at home.
Travel and changing countries
On a trip, a VPN is useful in two directions. You can reach services that still expect your home country. You can also pick a server in the country you are standing in when local speed is the goal.
Banks and some government sites dislike sudden IP jumps. If you must log into finance, use a server in your home country, complete the work, and do not mix that session with a streaming hop five minutes later. Save the backup codes for two-factor before you leave. SMS codes are unreliable on roaming.
Hotel networks throttle peer-to-peer and sometimes block VPNs. If the app will not connect, try another protocol in the settings (WireGuard is usually fastest; OpenVPN on TCP 443 often sneaks past crude blocks). If nothing connects, assume the network is hostile and wait for cellular.
Remember that a VPN is not a travel adapter for the law. Local rules about encryption and about what you may access still apply to you. A tunnel is not a costume.
Working from home and from other people’s offices
Split tunneling is the grown-up setting. You can send only work apps through the company VPN and let video calls use the raw line, or the reverse. Guessing is how people slow every tab to a crawl.
A personal VPN and a corporate VPN on the same machine can fight. If work requires their tunnel, use it for work. Use the personal VPN on a personal device, not nested inside the office one unless IT said to.
If you only need to look like you are on the office network to reach a file share, the company VPN is the right tool. A consumer VPN to a random city will not magically put you on that private LAN.
When you finish, disconnect. A laptop that stays on a distant server overnight will make every morning login look like it came from that city. That is how fraud systems get twitchy.
Streaming, catalogs, and why it breaks
People use VPNs to see another country’s library on a video app. Sometimes it works. The app checks IP, payment method, and account history. A well-known VPN IP gets blocked. The catalog snaps back. That is not you failing at settings. That is the service enforcing a license.
If you try anyway, connect first, then open the app. Clear the app’s cache if it still thinks you are at home. A server labeled “optimized for streaming” is a marketing line that means “this IP is less burned today.” It can change tomorrow.
Do not confuse a VPN with a DNS-only “smart DNS” product. Smart DNS can change how lookups resolve without encrypting the path. A VPN encrypts and changes IP. For privacy on public Wi-Fi, you want the tunnel, not only DNS.
Check the IP on this site after you connect. If Netflix still sees your house, your leak is real: IPv6 might be bypassing the VPN, or an app might be ignoring the system proxy. Turn off IPv6 on the adapter or enable the provider’s IPv6 leak protection, then test again.
Torrenting and other P2P
BitTorrent is a protocol. Using it to share files you do not have the right to share is still a legal problem a VPN will not erase. What a VPN can do is stop your ISP from seeing the peer list as clearly, and stop your home IP from appearing in a swarm.
If you do use P2P through a VPN, pick a provider that allows it on the server you chose. Many free and cheap endpoints block it. Enable the kill switch. A few seconds of a dropped tunnel is enough to publish the real IP to the swarm.
Bind the torrent client to the VPN adapter if the client offers that setting. It is more reliable than hoping every packet followed the default route.
Privacy, tracking, and the honest limits
A VPN hides your browsing destinations from the ISP and hides your home IP from the sites you visit. It does not hide you from the VPN company. You are choosing a new middleman. Read the logging policy. Prefer a provider that takes money without tying the account to extra identity you do not need to give.
Cookies, login sessions, and browser fingerprinting still work through a tunnel. If you sign into the same account, the site knows you. If you want less tracking, combine the VPN with a locked-down browser and fewer extensions. The VPN is not a disguise for an account you already created with your real email.
Against a government that can compel the VPN provider, assume the tunnel is not a magic cloak. Against a café and a casual advertiser, it is often enough.
How to turn it on so you can trust it
Treat the first hour as a test, not as a vibe.
- Note your IP, city, and ISP on this site with the VPN off.
- Connect to a nearby server. Reload. All three should change.
- Visit an IPv6 test. If an IPv6 address still shows your ISP, you have a leak.
- Disconnect. Confirm you return to the original IP.
- Turn on the kill switch, disable the VPN adapter in a test, and confirm the browser stops loading rather than falling back.
If the IP never changes, you are not using a VPN yet. You installed an app. Fix that before you rely on it in an airport.
Choosing a mode for the rest of the month
Leave it off at home if you like the ISP’s speed and you do not mind that network seeing destinations. Turn it on automatically on untrusted Wi-Fi. Use a home-country server for banking. Use a chosen country only when you mean to.
Set a monthly reminder to check that you still know the password, that two-factor is on, and that the app updated. A stale VPN app is just another piece of software with bugs.
Used this way, a VPN is dull in the best sense: a tunnel you can explain, an IP you can verify, and a habit you turn on when the network in front of you is not yours.
