How to change your IP address the honest way
VPN, hotspot, or a new DHCP lease. Then verify the public IP actually moved.
People search “how to change my IP address” when a site blocked them, a catalog is wrong, or they want to hide their IP. There are honest ways and useless ways. Rebooting the router sometimes gets a new dynamic IP from the ISP. A VPN, a proxy, or a mobile hotspot changes the public IP a website sees. None of those erase cookies, and none of them are a license to break a site’s rules.
What “change IP” actually means
Sites see the public IP of the last hop before them. On home WiFi that is usually the ISP address on the router. On a VPN it is the VPN server. On cellular it may be a CGNAT address shared with other customers.
Changing the local address on your laptop (192.168.x.x) does nothing for the public internet. That is the LAN IP. IP lookup tools show the public one. Always verify on a what is my IP page after you think you changed it.
Methods that can work
A VPN is the controllable method: pick a country, connect, confirm the new IPv4 and IPv6. A proxy can change the IP for one browser and leave the rest of the system exposed. A phone hotspot uses the mobile carrier’s IP instead of the home ISP.
Power cycling the router may request a new dynamic IPv4. It may not, if the ISP tied the lease to your modem. Toggling airplane mode on a phone can move you to a different CGNAT pool. Results vary.
Tor changes the IP through volunteer relays. It is slow. It is the wrong tool for banking. It is a research network, not a streaming remote.
What will not magically hide you
Incognito mode does not change your IP. Clearing cache does not. An “IP changer” browser extension that you found in an ad is often malware. VPNs that never alter the number on this site are not connected.
Geo blocks also look at payment country, account history, and DNS. A new IP is one signal, not a costume.
A clean test
- Copy your current public IP and IP location.
- Connect the method you chose (VPN, hotspot, or new lease).
- Reload the IP lookup. ISP name and city should match the new path.
- Disconnect and confirm you return to the original address.
If you need a different IP for privacy on public WiFi, use a reputable VPN and a kill switch. If you need a different IP because you violated a host’s terms, changing the number is not the lesson. Stopping is.
