Apple's AirTag was marketed as a way to find keys and bags. Within months, headlines filled with stalkers slipping trackers into purses and cars. Bluetooth item finders — AirTags, Tile, SmartTags, and a swarm of clones — work because a crowd of other people's phones quietly help locate them. That crowd-sourced map is brilliant for lost luggage and frightening when you did not consent to being the luggage.

Regulators and phone makers scrambled. The tech is not going away. Knowing how it works is how you keep it aimed at your backpack, not at someone else's autonomy.

How do these trackers find anything?

They broadcast a rotating Bluetooth signal. Nearby phones in the same finder network detect it and relay a rough location to the cloud when they have internet. You open an app and see a map. Precision varies — often room-level indoors with nearby phones, worse in empty countryside.

The network effect is the product. More phones mean better coverage. That is why Apple and Google pouring detection into the OS mattered more than any single white disc.

What made stalking possible?

Small size. Long battery. Separation alerts that were easy to ignore or not present early on. And a social gap: people did not yet check for unwanted trackers the way they check locks. Criminals and abusive partners noticed.

Apple added unwanted tracking alerts, NFC tap-to-identify, and louder chirps. Android added similar Detect Trackers features with Google. Airlines and police published guidance. The arms race continues with cheap no-name tags that may not play nice with official alerts.

How do you check yourself?

On iPhone, look for unknown AirTag alerts and use Finder settings. On Android, use the built-in unknown tracker detection where available. Physically search bags and cars if you have reason to worry — technology assists; it does not replace looking. If you find a tracker that is not yours, follow local guidance: document, disable if safe, contact authorities when threatened.

Owners should enable the protective features, mark items clearly, and never "gift" a tracker as a secret. Using one to follow a person without consent is illegal in many places and indefensible everywhere.

Same radios power wearables, headphones, and car pairings. Keep Bluetooth on when you need it; learn what your OS already warns about. Pairing prompts deserve a second look. And for privacy on shared networks, remember that physical trackers are a different threat model than IP lookup — an IP will not hide in your coat lining.

Crowdsourced location is a superpower. Like any superpower, it needs defaults that assume misuse. The disc under the passenger seat taught millions of people that lesson the hard way.
